James Overton Harris Sr.

James Overton Harris Sr., 86, died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in San Jacinto Church of Christ with Dale Dennis officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 S. Bell St.

James Overton Harris Sr. was born Aug. 23, 1930, in Goodnight to Hardy and Delia Harris. He married Lola Imogene "Boots" McIntosh on Aug. 10, 1946.
He went to work for American Trailer Equipment Co. and worked there for 27 years. He also worked for Phillips 66 in Adrian. In 1984, he began his own trailer repair business named Big Country. In 1985, he opened J&J Equipment and ran that business until he sold the company in 1995. James and Jean "Boots" were avid square dancers. They also called square dances and they taught their kids and grandkids how to dance. During retirement he enjoyed working with his hands. He loved wood working, gardening and playing his guitar. The family enjoyed the fruits of his labor every Christmas when he would give them a hand-made wooden shelf or personalized sign he crafted.He was a member of San Jacinto Church of Christ, Southwest Cowboy Poet Society and Panhandle Bluegrass Association.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Harris; a granddaughter, Rhonda Rose; and a great-granddaughter, Abigale Neely. Survivors include his daughters, Liz Kemp and husband Lewis of Amarillo and Lavonia Nuchols and husband John of Winchester, Ky.; a son, James "Jim" Harris and wife Nancy of Corsicana; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.
